Expressing Gratitude

For most of us, the world changed in one way or another on March 11, 2020. While It’s obvious that we’re moving in the right direction for recovery from the economic and industry impacts of the pandemic, I’m thankful to my family, friends, and colleagues that served as a sounding board throughout the past 3 years.

At the risk of inflaming possible PTSD, I think back to the early days of 2020 and remember how lonely and unsure we were of the future. It made me think differently about my career and our industry. I’ve always been a “personal seller” meaning that I enjoyed the relationships of our clients. My “job” wasn’t just selling hotel rooms, it was building partnerships and learning how to solve our customer’s needs.

Now that most of us are back on the road and attending in-person events again, those early days of Covid have an underlying influence on our emotions and personal interactions. I recently returned from a corporate travel TMC Account Manager event. These Account Managers had not been “out” in more than 3 years; the joy of seeing their teams from across North America was evident but the appreciation for their supplier partners like me was also obvious. This particular TMC event was not an isolated occurrence. I’ve noticed throughout 2022 that many of my interactions with our partners are more personal in nature and it makes me happy. We’re all balancing more work with less staff but we’re looking at our responsibilities in a different light. I suspect the reasons are different for each of us but regardless of the exact situation, I’m thankful that we’re seeing more humanity from one another. That humanity comes in many forms…it could be that I see your home office every time we jump on a Teams call, maybe you need to step away from our call so you can greet your kid coming home from school, or maybe you bring a plus-one to our client event. Adding these personal elements to our interactions is a welcome dose of individualism and I’m hopeful the trend continues.

To our business partners, we extend warm wishes on Thanksgiving and a warm thank you for helping us grow by exploring new opportunities. The occasion of Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to thank you for being there for us forever.

A little gratitude is all we need to spread happiness and positivity around us.  Another year of working together and another year to achieving the impossible.

May this festive season be full of laughter and celebrations, feasts and festivities for you and your loved ones.

Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday for many reasons. It's an opportunity to connect with friends and family without pretense. To just simply be with each other, enjoy a meal and reinforce meaningful connections.

As Ben so eloquently pointed out, the hospitality business is all about connecting and developing relationships, something that has been challenging to do over the last few years, but is now more important that ever.

For me, connecting on a personal level has always held a deeper meaning. People want to belong, they want to be heard and they want to be seen. When we seek to understand, build those bonds, and develop friendships, then everything else falls into place.

Like my counterparts, I am thankful for my friends and family, both personal and professional. I am thankful to be in an industry, and with a company, that still believes in the value of it's people, how we connect and what we can accomplish together.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

HOLIDAY CHEER FROM OUR KITCHEN TO YOURS

NY Style Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup Cold Butter cut into small cubes

1 cup Brown Sugar

½ cup Sugar

2 Eggs

½ cup Dark Baking Cocoa

1 cup Cake Flour

1 ½ cup All-Purpose Flour

1 teaspoon Cornstarch

¾ teaspoon Baking Soda

½ teaspoon Salt

1 ⅓ cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  • Mix sugars, cocoa, cornstarch, flours, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt in a bowl (preferably a standing mixer with a paddle attachment)
  • Turn the mixer on low and slowly add in the cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  • Add eggs 1 at a time and continue to mix on low until a cohesive dough starts to form.
  • Add in the chocolate chips.
  • Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out dough into balls on a cookie sheet. You can make the cookies as large as you like. The typical NYC cookie is 2-4 ounces. I usually do 1-2 ounce cookies.
  • Place cookie sheet in the freezer for at least 1 hour before baking.

Bake at 410 degrees for 8 minutes. Baking time may vary based on oven, but don’t over bake. Cookies should be slightly golden on the tops. Let cool for 10 minutes and enjoy.
